Una vacante imprevista has ratings and reviews. I returned it to the library and my kids asked about the author (they recognized JK Rowling). Too many characters and a very slow read. There are moments of brilliance in the writing, but it doesn’t make up for the almost complete lack of humor, poignancy or even a single likable character.

I did get to the end, so I won’t give it one star. Do you hate the use of GIFs? Rowling does a lot of character vacabte and little plot development, but …more around the th page it picks up and moves fast. What did I get?
Or maybe none of them were very relatable, redeeming, or likable. Full of anger, spite and envy, only looking out for number one. If The Casual Vacancy is like that, I won’t love it. Can’t adults have a life beyond sex, drugs, cheapness etc.

Rowling is a good writer. Maybe because there were so many characters, I never felt connected to any of them. At least throw a few choice words together as modifiers to make the cursing less monotonous. Open Preview See a Problem?
It was fixed by the next day. The novel that can be compared to a similar social situation was Jeffery Archer’s Prison Diaries. Only this time, it’s all grays and groans and there’s no humor or fun anywhere in its excessive length. Would I have bought this book after reading the description if another name was on the cover? And because it’s by her, I can’t believe I gave up.
When word came earlier this year that the book would drop during the eight-week “sweet spot” before the Presidential Election in the United States I grew leery. One of the prevailing themes of the Potter books was love.
Also, her editor should be sued as well for imprevidta telling her, “Look, JK, this is just a pile of rotten walrus vomit. Frankly, I need a bit of both; I enjoy a balanced plot. I’m reading it because it’s written by J. I felt like The Casual Vacancy unnecessarily dirty and vulgar. Good thing for libraries. Perhaps somewhere down the line if they fix the Kindle version and I’m in a different place emotionally I may try my hand at reading it again. Life can be tough, yeah, I get that. No one, I suspect, reads Rowling for the beauty of her sentences but there is often a sense here that the language is not quite doing what she wants it to do.
