I believe that Ibn Warraq’s critique makes an almost unassailable case that Said’s central thesis is nowhere near as universally applicable to Western depictions of the East as it is made out to be. An apostasy, that is to say, leaving your religion in Islam, is punishable by death. The massacres of three hundred thousand people in Uganda by Idi Amin or of in Rwanda in Warraq does an excellent job of showing how Orientalism damaged free expression and open dialogue.

Ibn Warraq is the pen name of an author most famous for his criticism of Islam. That’s a good thing. Rhonda rated it really liked it Dec 01, I had heard of the book before, but until reading it and discussing it in class had never appreciated the scope of its criticisms.
Warraq illustrates how many artists did capture accurate fhe of the Arab world, and that the two civilizations influenced each other in an open and fair manner. I don’t find it conservative because it promises to revolutionize the field of cultural studies, which had previously been transformed by Said’s book.
