Since I have already read three of the five earlier volumes “Band of Brothers”, “Citizen Soldiers”, and “D-Day”much of this material was very familiar to me.
With that said, I did enjoy sections of the book, in particular, the parts involving Eisenhower and his general staff.

This isn’t quite as comprehensive as the publisher makes out because it essentially tells the linear story of the American advance but nevertheless this is an excellent book. There were several instances of bravery, heroism, resilience and soldierly conduct observed on both sides of the battlefield unlike the Eastern front which was an absolute hell in comparison. Charismatic and brave, Lewis was the perfect choice and he experienced the hdrmanos North American continent before any other white man.

Aside from Eisenhower, junior officers, NCOs and privates are the heroes of this book. By some miracle, the men found an undamaged high-rise apartment building in which everything worked—electricity, hot water, flush toilets, and telephones with dial tones.

From their rigorous training in Georgia in to the dangerous parachute landings on D-Day and their triumphant capture of Hitler’s ‘Eagle’s Nest’ in Berchtesgaden. The vast losses they suffered are almost unimaginable today – and the courage they displayed in the face of savage, and unrelenting, combat exacerbated by questionable command decisions and policies pointedly explained and critiqued by Ambrose – justifies his great admiration of them.

Fans of Ambrose will certainly enjoy this book, although they may be disappointed to find that is contains very little new information. As many other reviews point out, apparently this one rehashes a lot of material from several other of his books.
