Kumagl First of those who are first And O Last of those who are last! This personal prayer differs from the alternative liturgical prayer of salat. O’ Lord, o’ Lord!

In contrast, a du’a, or mental prayer, is a private, inward prayer often of meditation, fikr. Strengthen my bodily members in Your service, And fortify my ribs in determination And bestow upon me earnestness in my fear of You And continuity in my being joined to Your service So that I may move easily toward You in the battlefields of the foremost And hurry to You among the prominent And desire fervently Your proximity among the fervently desirous And move nearer to You with the nearness of the sincere And fear You with the fear of those who have certitude And gather with the believers in Your vicinity.

And over bodily members speeding to the places of Your worship in obedience and beckoning for Your forgiveness in submission. Bless Mohammed and the Descendants of Mohammed and do unto me in accordance with engkish which befitteth Thee.

And this world with its delusions, my own soul with its offences and my delay have deceived me. Whether You wilt give the Fire dominion over faces fallen down prostrate before Your Tremendousness. But now I have turned Thee, my Lord, after being guilty of omissions and transgressions against my soul, apologetically, repentantly, broken heartedly, entreating earnestly for forgiveness, yieldingly confessing to my guilt as I can find no escape from that which was done by me and having no refuge to which I could turn except seeking Thy acceptance of my excuse and admitting me into the realm of Thy capacious mercy.

O’ Thou upon Whom I rely! The Du’a al-Kumayl is specifically recited for “protecting against the evil of enemies, for opening the gate of one’s daily bread and for the forgiveness of sins. Or how should he be convulsed among its levels, while You know his sincerity? I look earnestly towards Thee and towards Thee, my Lord! Or how should he have hope of Your bounty in freeing him from it, while You abandonest him within it?

O You who gave rise to my creation, to the remembrance of me, to the nurture of me, to goodness toward me and to nourishment on me. Bestow upon me for the sake of Your having given rise [to me] with generosity and Your previous goodness to me! In contrast, suspended or conditional predetermination states that while God predetermines all creation’s fate, the deity may grant prayers based upon a conditional decree.

Which Thou in Thy mercy hast kept secret and through Thy kindness unexposed and I pray to Thee to make my share plentiful in all the good that Thou dost bestow; in all the favours that Thou dost grant; and in all the virtues that Thou dost allow to be known everywhere; and in all the sustenance and livelihood that Thou dost expand and in respect of all the sins that Thou dost forgive and the wrongs that Thou dost cover up O’ Lord!

I have stretched forth my hands therefore, by Thy honour, respond to my supplication and let me attain my wishes and, by Thy bounty, frustrate not my hopes and protect me from the evils of my enemies, from among the jinns and mankind o’ Thou!

And by Thy grandeur which prevails upon all things And by Thy authority which is exercised over all things And by Thy own self that shall endure forever after all things have vanished And by Thy Names which manifest Thy power over all things And by Thy knowledge which pervades all things And by the light of Thy countenance which illuminates everything O Thou who art the light!

And o’ Thou who art the Lord of the universe. And how many ordeals You hast repelled! You are more generous than that You should squander him whom You have nurtured. O You who gave rise to my creation, to the remembrance of me, to the nurture of me, to goodness toward me and to nourishment on me, Bestow upon me for the sake of Your having given rise [to me] with generosity and Your previous goodness to me!

O’ Thou who holdeth my destiny and who art aware of my suffering and poverty. Even though it is a tribulation and ordeal whose stay is short, whose subsistence is but little and, whose period is but fleeting.

Other than Your acceptance of my excuse and Your entering me into the compass of Your mercy.

And calls to You with the tongue of those who profess Your Unity. And how can he withstand its roaring flames when Thou knowest his fraility? And how much beautiful praise, for which I was unworthy, You have spread abroad!

How many burdensome tribulations You hast abolished!
