The imagining of something better, that is what I liked about this book.

Canopus, the good guys, and Puttiora, the bad guys. Because, and trust me on this, it’s not worth it. Much of what we find out about Sherban comes from his sister’s account. Shikasta is also the name of the fictional planet featured in the novel. I actually kind-of liked that.

I just found it too painful–as reflected in the one-hit wonder song MacArthur Park: Something about all the other peoples of the world turning against the white people, but there turns out to be some tendency toward reconciliation, after all.

Shikasta’s allegorical meaning also makes it an awkward fit within science fiction, a genre that tends to take its spaceships and alien visitations literally.

With every visit he tries to distract Shikastans from the evil influences of the planet Shammat but notes with dismay the ever-growing chaos and destruction of Shikasta as its people hurl themselves towards World War III and annihilation.
