Personally, I find it classy and applaud the consistency, even if the Dell logo up top is positively gigantic but then again, everyone does that. Firstly you need to ask yourself Do you really need a 30 inch monitor? This monitor is perfect for texts, no eye or head ache after hours of working.

The setting for video games allows for richer looks of blacks and reds. The weird part about the U’s mounting arm is that it connects to the mm VESA mount on the backside of the display with 4 T Torx screws.

It does have a lot of adjustability, just not a huge range. Panel uniformity is reasonable, and I haven’t had any problems with ghosting in high frame-rate applications such as 3D gaming.
Because of the high refresh rate, which is 7 ms, the Dell widescreen monitor delivers better quality for games and photos. The size isn’t a great improvement over my previous 27 monitor but the added resolution is noticable. The U is supposed to come calibrated from the factory, accompanied by a calibration report showing Delta-E tracking averaging below 5. If I were to improve one thing, it would be the speed when firing the thing up, or when switching between inputs.
Oh, there’s also a DC power jack in case you’re using the Dell speaker bar with the U which is an added accessory – we didn’t get a chance to try that.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned doing display reviews, it’s that the inch segment represents as it should the best of the best. Being a bigger size display it needs to be higher to balance its proportion for ergonomics. Though that should be more than sufficient to charge an iPad, connecting one resulted in utlrasharp same “Not Charging” behavior one would see from a normal mA port.
We later learned that this is because our U is a pre-production sample which is identical to the shipping model, just without factory calibration.
The backside of the U is nothing new or special if you’ve seen Dell’s other recent display designs.
