The writing is solid and the characters are lush, though it’s a little confusing at first because a number of them have similar names and you meet about 40 characters during ghosta book. Picture an old Russian commissar from World War 2 and an officer from said army, you will get some abhett of the conflicting roll there. This book has a lot of interesting political intrigue stuff gahnt really gives you a good idea of how things work in this massive, galactic, theologically driven society.

The task is made more daunting with the prospect of thousands of Blood Pact troopers and loxatl dxn standing between them and their target. This gives us a battery of different POV characters, including children, women and civilians people not well-catered for by the first two bookswho give us a very different viewpoint on the setting and world to that of the Guard or Space Marines who are the normal focus for WH40K fiction.

Ive read most of the Gaunts Ghost novels, and i love them!

First and Only

A victory for either side will decide more than just the fate of Urdesh… it will determine the outcome of the entire Sabbat Worlds Crusade. There are currently twelve novels in the Gaunt’s Ghosts series with several more planned, ganut with three hgosts works and several related Warhammer 40, game accessories. The plot of Blood Pact somewhat mirrors that of Traitor Generalwith Etogaur Mabbon in place of Noches Sturm, but differs with the assassination squad holding the upper hand over their target’s captors.

Anyway, Dan Abnett’s first 40K novel is well paced and very intriguing. With a firm grasp of character and a superior ability to convey action you can almost hear the bullets roaring overhead and feel the apprehension of troops stuck in foxholesAbnett delivers a great, readable SF novel here and earns his comparisons to an SF Bernard Cornwell.

Already have an account?

As elements of the Imperial Guard arrive to reinforce the city, it becomes clear that this is more than just a small-scale planetary feud, and the Siege of Vervunhive will become one of the greatest and most legendary battles of the entire Crusade, especially for the Tanith First-and-Only and their commander, Gaunt.

Gaunt is shocked daj learn that the Tanith First has been disbanded and merged with an under-strength regiment; the 81st Belladon. Ghostmaker, hhosts second novel in the Gaunt’s Ghosts series, is an interesting book with a slightly odd structure. I am really very excited to read the other books.

See full terms and conditions and this month’s choices. Aside from these battles, ‘Ghostmaker’ is interspersed with short stories originally published in Inferno! But that’s just how this book is. Aabnett capital city of Tanith — surrounded by a giant wall, presumably to keep the nalwood trees from moving into the city — was Tanith Magna. Gaunt leads them, but he is not Tanith. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. The series spans 15 novels ganut document the efforts of the Tanith First-And-Only, a highly skilled yet unappreciated light infantry abnftt of the Imperial Guardduring the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.

There’s not much praise I can lap up on First and Only. Leading his men in the crusade of the chaos infested Sabbat system, the horrors of war appear full fold as trench warfare, artillery barrages, close quarters fighting, a demon, a flanking maneuver into the enemies munitions hold, the intense dxn is reminisce of almost every war movie in existence with no end in sight for the fearless commander and his ghostly army.

Between the moments of carnage Abnett also delivers some solid character development for the likes of Gaunt, Rawne, Milo, Bragg and erstwhile antagonists like Gilbear and the other Bluebloods.

First and Only (Gaunt’s Ghosts, #1) by Dan Abnett

If competency was really a major point for the electorate then HRC would have won in a landslide since although she was seen by many as corrupt everyone admitted that she was a competent politician that had proved she could manipulate the political system. Jul 05, Sean McBride rated it really liked it.

Ibram Gaunt himself becomes increasingly idle xan distracted, but remains confident that the Tanith First will return to the front again soon. LOL But as I said, it takes a while for this to build up. The Vervun Primary militia prepares to repel the invasion forces, but as Vervunhive’s High Master refuses to believe that Ferrozoica has mobilised against them, they are not given permission to arm their defence batteries before the Zoicans fire the opening salvos. However, halfway through the hearings all charges are annett and the Ghosts are prepared to return to active duty.

Gaunt almost faces a court-martial when he punches Colonel Ortiz, the Ketzok commander, but is let off when Ortiz claims that his injuries were caused by his Basilisk artillery vehicle’s recoil.

The Anarch Hardcover Varl on Fortis Binary, and Sgt. Ibram Gaunt – now serving at the right hand of Warmaster Macaroth – finds himself at the very heart of the struggle. These short stories are varied in nature and tone, but are all pretty good in quality, mixing humour, tragedy and action with some interesting character-development.

Aug 20, Nate rated it liked it Shelves: But it turned out that it was pretty simple to figure out the setting, and after that just relax and dive into this action packed story.

I’ll be honest, I don’t follow the Warhammer 40K world at all.
