Picture an old Russian commissar from World War 2 and an officer from said army, you will get some abhett of the conflicting roll there. This book has a lot of interesting political intrigue stuff gahnt really gives you a good idea of how things work in this massive, galactic, theologically driven society.
The task is made more daunting with the prospect of thousands of Blood Pact troopers and loxatl dxn standing between them and their target. This gives us a battery of different POV characters, including children, women and civilians people not well-catered for by the first two bookswho give us a very different viewpoint on the setting and world to that of the Guard or Space Marines who are the normal focus for WH40K fiction.
Ive read most of the Gaunts Ghost novels, and i love them!

There’s not much praise I can lap up on First and Only. Leading his men in the crusade of the chaos infested Sabbat system, the horrors of war appear full fold as trench warfare, artillery barrages, close quarters fighting, a demon, a flanking maneuver into the enemies munitions hold, the intense dxn is reminisce of almost every war movie in existence with no end in sight for the fearless commander and his ghostly army.
Between the moments of carnage Abnett also delivers some solid character development for the likes of Gaunt, Rawne, Milo, Bragg and erstwhile antagonists like Gilbear and the other Bluebloods.

These short stories are varied in nature and tone, but are all pretty good in quality, mixing humour, tragedy and action with some interesting character-development.
