Both the novel and the film are brutally violent, but Miike’s violence is much more inventive, and the lack of needles in the novel was sorely missed.

Blinded by his instant and total infatuation, Aoyama is too late in discovering that she is a far cry from the innocent young woman he imagines her to be.

I do tend to kind of shy away from anything too disturbing, so that’s why I just couldn’t put it with my beloved four stars. Of course, it is hard to discuss Audition without referencing Miike’s adaptation.

There can’t just be one or two auditiln scenes and one hundred pages of sludge. Miike gained a lot from elegantly wrought source material — but the book is now in danger of seeming like a draft, or even a screen treatment. Pages with related products. But love is nothing if not blind, and while Aoyama does uncover a history of abuse in this troubled ex-ballerina’s childhood, he’s convinced that Yamasaki has transcended this hurt to become model wife material.

Although I really wanted to know more about Yamasaki, and felt that the underdevelopment of the audition concept was perhaps an opportunity missed, the novel is a highly compulsive, one-sitting read, and Audition should add to the Renaissance Man’s growing fanbase in the English-speaking world.


The visual experience is a much more visceral one, and the flat tone of the novel can’t compete with the level of tension on the screen. Loved it, plain and simple.

Sep 20, Zak rated it liked it. The only book I read of Stephen King is “on writing” which has nothing to do with his original genre. Like I’ve said, the book is fast-paced, easy to read yet devastating. The end is very sudden and plain silly. Murskami enduring subject aired in numerous essays and television discussions, as well as in novels and films is the cultural and psychological cost of post-war modernisation, especially as it ended.

The story is simple, full of clues pointing toward what is to happen the size of China, the language is simple, The plot is uncomplicated, the knowledge gained is little and of doubtful value, the horror for those who like it is minimally invasive and barely intrudes into our shared relation in the later part of the book.

Brutal, illogical auditin and acts all stem from their utter inability to understand each other in the disconnection of modern society. The turn of events comes as no surprise: Some of you in my horror circle have this on your TBR list you know who you are. And the overall structure of the violence only occurring at the end made for great anticipation.
